Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio
The mood at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio became as messy in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or collapsing.
The Youngster's Surprising Return
One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad lacking backup options.
He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
