European Right-Wing Setting the Political Agenda, Research Reveals
Established political parties are more and more allowing the radical right to set the public discourse, as per a recent research conducted in Germany.
Academics discovered that this trend has unwittingly helped far-right parties by validating their viewpoints and disseminating them more widely.
Analysis Based on Two Decades of Media Reporting
The results, released in the academic journal on political studies, relied on an computerized content review of more than 520,000 news pieces from six national newspapers.
Capital-based researchers noted that as the far right moved from marginal topics in the late 1990s to core themes like integration and immigration, mainstream political groups increasingly adjusted their communication in response.
This adaptation amplified the spread of these ideas and indicated to voters that such stances were acceptable.
Consequences for Democracy
"Public communication by established parties is crucial in the voting performance of the radical right," stated a political sociologist involved in the study.
"This factor has been underestimated," she added.
The impact was evident even when mainstream parties were condemning the far right. "You're still giving them attention," the researcher remarked. "Our core argument is that because we live in such a battle for attention, this focus is crucial."
Mainstreaming Phenomenon Across the Continent
While the research was focused on Germany, this mainstreaming phenomenon is likely to apply to nations across the European continent.
"You see this a lot in European media," explained another researcher. "The far right makes a statement and everybody starts talking about it for several days."
"Even if you're countering it, you're echoing it," he stated.
Hardening of Political Rhetoric
At certain points, political figures have also hardened their language to match that of the radical right.
In a recent interview, a former German chancellor advocated widespread expulsions and pushed for them to happen "more frequently and rapidly."
Similar examples can be observed across the continent, as elected officials from nations including the United Kingdom to the French Republic adopt the rhetoric of the far right, particularly on migration.
This has created an echo chamber that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.
Central Issue: Who Sets the Narrative?
"{If you're a moderate political group and you are discussing cultural issues – migration, assimilation – in a way that is determined by the rhythm of the far right, that's the whole idea of narrative control," clarified a study author.
Some political parties have taken additional measures, seeking to copy the hardline agenda of the radical right, even as research indicates that this approach drives voters to vote for the radical faction.
Progressive Impact and Public Perception
The extent of data gathered showed that the impact of radical parties had been progressive and had grown over time.
"Voter awareness doesn't change from one day to another," commented a researcher. "However, when you hear this pessimistic narrative around migration every second week, and it is being spread not only by radical groups but also, for instance, by mainstream parties, then of course this storyline gains more traction."
Requirement for Established Parties to Carve Out Their Own Discourses
The study highlighted the need for mainstream political parties to carve out their distinct discourses, especially on topics such as immigration and assimilation, instead of continuously trailing after the radical right.
"It's like a dance," explained one researcher. "When the leader is radical and you're reacting to it, you lose the ability to choose which tune should be playing."
